It was a night of pomp and pageantry for the nation’s media industry as Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and former Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Vincent Maduka, were among distinguished personalities honoured at the Vanguard Awards ceremony.

Idris was conferred with the Image Maker of the Year award while Maduka bagged lifetime achievement award.

In his speech, Idris said,“this award is a testament to the trust we strive to build with every Nigerian. Communication is at the heart of governance, and it must foster confidence, unity, and hope.”

Saying communication must not only inform but also build trust, he further highlighted the importance of transparency and regular engagement with the public and the media, noting that fostering open dialogue has been crucial in bridging the gap between governance and public perception.

Idris also underscored the vital role of timely, accurate information in matters of national security, stressing ongoing collaboration with security agencies and media partners to maintain public calm and strengthen confidence in government efforts.

Recognising indispensable roles of the media, his colleagues in government, and the ministry’s dedicated staff in advancing the nation’s communication framework, he also commended Vanguard Media Limited for its commitment to excellence and for celebrating national service.

To him, “as we navigate major policy shifts—including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange reforms, and fiscal restructuring—our approach has centered on clarity, consistency, and credibility. We are committed to ensuring that government decisions are communicated with empathy and responsibility, always highlighting their long-term benefits for all Nigerians.”

Restating commitment to upholding highest standards of public communication, anchored on truth, transparency, and accountability, he added the award is not an endpoint, but a call to do more for.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of the event and former Minister of State Petroleum Resources, Henry Odein Ajomugobia, said,“Nigeria with all its challenges remains a nation of immense promise, but also of deep complexity.”

It is a place where talent abounds, where ambition thrives, but not always realised and where resilience is tested daily. Our social, economic, and institutional realities often present contradictions—where systems do not always reward diligence and hard work as they ought to and where the temptation to cut corners can be strong, and sometimes even normalised.

“Yet, it is within this very environment that we see remarkable examples of perseverance. Men and women who, despite the odds, choose the harder path—who blaze trails work hard , build, create, and lead with a sense of purpose. “Tonight, we acknowledge some of those journeys.

“The Vanguard Personality of the Year platform has always reflected the realities of our society. It celebrates achievement, yes—but it also recognizes that the path to impact is rarely perfect. Many of those we honor have distinguished themselves through notable accomplishments, even as their journeys remind us that leadership exists within a broader human context, shaped by pressures, choices, and consequences. As we celebrate our honourees this evening, we do so with admiration and reflection. We commend hardwork, innovation and resilience, especially in a society where impunity appears to be rewarded.”

On his part, Editor at Vanguard Newspapers and President Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Eze Anaba, said, “tonight, we are not merely conferring awards; we are celebrating individuals whose vision, resilience and hard work have built industries, driven economic growth and continue to inspire. One of the greatest challenges faced by the Board of Editors is the rigorous process of nomination, selection and screening, which can take up to 12 weeks. This ensures that only the most deserving individuals are honoured. At the end of this thorough exercise, we are left with individuals who have defied the odds.
