Nigerian universities must be self-reliant, says Ajayi Crowther VC

Graduates 348 students, as Alaafin, Ajimobi’s wife bags Doctorate degrees

In spite of the current economic recession and its attendant challenges, Nigerian universities have been asked to think out of the box and be self –reliant, particularly in the area of funding.

Vice chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Prof Dapo Asaju who disclosed this to reporters said the institution does not receive any grants, subventions or other form of financial support from its proprietors or elsewhere, but its still able to pay its staffs as at when due and meet other financial obligations.

Giving a breakdown of the list of the graduating students, Prof. Asaju said the 348 graduands comprises 18 first class, 119 second class (upper division), 203 second Class (lower division) and eight third class graduates.


Pointing out the sharp decline in the number of third class graduates from 103 in the last convocation to eight in the current year, the VC explained that the senate of the institution had resolved to ensure that lecturers put in more efforts to teach and supervise their students tutorials and reward brilliant students in order to reduce the number of students graduating in the third class category.

He also disclosed that this class of degree would be stated that in spite of the paucity of funds, the management was able to execute projects that have helped in improving the physical and infrastructural outlook of the institution.
