DELSU to host translation studies conference, workshop

The Delta State University, Abraka, is set to host the maiden conference and workshop of the Association of Translation Studies in Africa (ATSA) Nigeria chapter, beginning from the 18th to 22nd November 2019.

The Delta State University, Abraka, is set to host the maiden conference and workshop of the Association of Translation Studies in Africa (ATSA) Nigeria chapter, beginning from the 18th to 22nd November 2019. The conference also features a workshop session on writing and publishing in African Translation Studies anchored by Dr. Uchenna Onyalli of the University of Abuja. Thereafter another two weeks of intensive professional development training in Translation Technology will follow till the 30th of November.

The event which promises to draw scholars and experts from around the world has “Translation Studies in Africa and Beyond” as its theme while the sub-themes cover all aspects of Translation Studies including the new models involving the engagement of most current ICT software. The training that will follow the conference is open to all those interested in learning the use of translation software and other computer- aided- translation tools.

within and outside the university system.In a statement by the convener, Professor Rita Mebitaghan who is also the Head of the Department of Languages and Linguistics at the Delta State University, Abraka, the event is an attempt to propagate Translation Studies and promote the training of professional translators in Nigeria because of the dearth of such in the country. While the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victor Peretomode is the Chief Host, the Keynote Speaker will be Professor Isaiah Bariki of the University of Ilorin. A leadpaper will be delivered by Professor Kobus Marais from the University of the Free State, South Africa. The event which begins at 10:00 a. m. daily will afford participants the opportunity to use the new language laboratory fitted with the latest software in modern translation studies. The training will attract a training fee of N100, 000 which covers accommodation.
