Going In So We Can Go Outside
Another Detty December is upon us. Everyone is outside this season; introverts are not left out.

Around this time of the year, savers and spenders are usually on the same page about the acronym ‘YOLO’ and service providers understand their assignment which is to inflate the prices of goods and services with their full chest without blaming the exchange rates for once. It feels like we all let loose in December without consequences.
The feeling of joy, celebration and freedom that December brings can be likened to the days preceding graduation. Exams are over; students eligible for graduation are relieved and joyfully prepping for their big day. In this analogy, the criterion for graduating is just passing examinations. Similarly, we have a belief that the criterion for a celebrating the coming of a new year is simply being alive, however there is more. In the case of a graduation, students can easily deduce if they have passed or failed, also, the areas of improvement are clearly spelt out. On the other hand, for the latter, we have to evaluate ourselves individually to decipher if we have passed all the courses offered by 2023.
It is pertinent to evaluate this year before you commence your Detty December. As Albert Einstein once said, “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity.” Entering into a new year without reflecting on the lessons of the current one is like celebrating graduation with your colleagues when you haven’t passed all your examinations. To conduct your annual appraisal, successfully answer the following questions:
What New Thing Have You Learnt About Yourself This Year?
Questions about self-awareness is easily the most important question because everything else makes more sense when you know yourself. This year might have taught you more than one thing but never less. Sadly, some people who lack self-awareness celebrate year after year without learning anything. They are about entering 2024 but are still rewriting 2015 courses without even knowing it. What you have learnt about yourself could range from getting to know about your temperament to finding out you have musical skills. Write it down.
What Treasure Did You Find This Year?
“Believe it or not, everyone found a treasure this year, including You. Some people found love, some found genuine friendship, some started a business or got their dream job. Having a child is finding a treasure too. Discovering a talent is an underrated treasure. It could be getting a visa, buying a car or even ending a toxic relationship: finding yourself. There is a lot to be grateful for. Surviving the year alone is a huge flex. We all had a big win this year. What’s yours?
What next?
“2024 is just an even number, if we want to be objective. It would have the same number of days in a week and months in a year. The coming year would be exactly what you ask it to be. This is not to say that we totally control the future and what it brings but we are major stakeholders in how it plays out. One way to plan for the future is by setting long and short-term goals under three categories: Having, Doing and Being.
Having
“Using the template below, list the things you would like to have in the coming year and segment them based on the attainable timeline. Be realistic about how long it would take you to achieve these goals. Please note that nothing is too small or too big to put down, it could be a wig or a private jet. Just write it.
S/N | 6 Months | 12 Months |
1. | A Laptop | A Car |
Doing
What would you really like to get done this year? This category requires more than your desire, your action is needed, or else nothing is going to change.
S/N | 6 Months | 12 Months |
1. | Learn A New Skill | Build A House
|
Being
This is the art of manifesting your desires and putting it down in faith that it will be achieved. As the good book says, “Write the vision and engrave it so plainly upon tablets that everyone who passes may read as he hastens by.”
S/N | 6 Months | 12 Months |
1. | A Certified Professional | A Spouse

Once you have completed all three questions, kindly save your answers in an accessible place for frequent review and then you can proceed to enjoy your Detty December outside.
