NICO set to unveil annual World Orisa Congress
The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, yesterday announced the institute’s initiative to launch the annual World Orisa Congress.
This initiative stems from the desire of the approximately 500 million Nigerians of Orisa descent living in countries such as Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, and other Caribbean nations to reconnect with their ancestral roots and spirituality.
The congress aims to unite practitioners, scholars, and enthusiasts from around the world to celebrate the rich traditions and contemporary practices surrounding Orisa worship.
During a recent press briefing at the Institute’s headquarters in Wuse, Abuja, Otunba highlighted the project’s potential to create 200,000 jobs and generate an estimated $6 billion, welcoming millions of visitors to Nigeria.
He also emphasized the proactive measures being taken to collaborate with Nigeria’s security agencies, as well as those from the visiting countries, to ensure a secure and well-coordinated environment throughout this significant spiritual event.
“The World Orisa Congress further seeks to break down cultural barriers and stereotypes, create a psychological profile for our foreign policy trust in the actualization of Africans in the Diaspora and other global audiences, and create future exponential revenue bases on a sustainable basis to diversify our economy.
“We intend to use our traditional institutions as gatekeepers and standard bearers of our cultural patrimony, encourage cultural exchange and collaboration, and make Nigeria a foremost cultural tourism destination on an expansive scale of pilgrimage,” he said.
