The Africa Film Academy, producers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), have restated that the 20th edition of the award would hold in Lagos on Saturday November 2. AMAA, widely regarded as Africa’s premier film award, celebrates excellence and creativity in the continent’s film industry.

The producers revealed that the 20th edition is set to be particularly special, as it not only honours the best in African filmmaking but also marks two decades of recognizing outstanding African cinema. The producers announced nominations for the 20th edition on October 2. Leading this year’s nominations is the film, The Weekend, which has earned an impressive 16 nominations.

The movie is in the running for major categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and Achievement in Cinematography, positioning it as a potential frontrunner. Following closely behind is South Africa’s The Queenstown Kings, with 15 nominations, also competing for top awards such as Best Film, Best Director, and Cinematography. With its strong presence across multiple categories, the film is poised to be a major contender at this year’s event.

Other notable nominees include, This is Lagos, Under The Hanging Tree, and Out of Breath, each receiving nine nominations. Nigerian filmmaker, Femi Adebayo’s much-loved film, Jagun Jagun, also made the list with seven nominations, showcasing the diversity and depth of talent across African cinema.

The upcoming 20th edition of AMAA is being held in partnership with the Lagos State government, with the theme ‘Celebrating African Creativity’.
