’Deza The Great’ Makes Giant Strides in Nollywood

YouTube, the video sharing app that was established in 2005 remains the most popular video distribution channel for Nollywood. It has become more serious since 2021. Every day, a minimum of 50 new movies are uploaded on YouTube.

One of the domino effects of COVID 19 was that it changed the paradigm of things. Almost every sector had a twist, a change in pattern. Before the lockdown, only a few people were optimizing YouTube, a lot of industry stakeholders used the traditional DVD. Only a small fraction of the actors had a YouTube channel. Right now, the reverse is the case; almost every actor has a page where they upload their movies. Even movies that have been in their hard drive for more than a decade are uploaded for the audience to view. The 1980s and 1990s VHS cassettes are being uploaded. Take for instance , some movies from legends like Hubert Ogunde, Adeyemi Afolayan AKA Ade Love, Oyin Adejobi, Moses Olaiya better known as Baba Sala, are being shown to audiences.

The Idumota movie marketers controlled the movie industry from 1990s till late 2010s; these individuals and corporate companies decided who became stars. They were big, underground actors ran to them for support.

This way, new stars are being made; they are given the needed exposure. Just like Idumota produced movie stars in the 2000s, now it is the time for YouTube. One of the new guys that have been appearing more is the University of Lagos-trained Deza The Great, real name Adekanla Desalu.

He has become more prominent in the last two years appearing on movies uploaded on Ruth Kadiri’s YouTube channel, Deza has recently been uploading on his own YouTube channel, too.

In the November 2022 released “The Manager,” Deza acts as the troublesome, spendthrift husband who was all out to curtail his wife. He seamlessly enters this frame, you tend to wonder if this was really who he is, acting, reality, who knows, Deza has been able to transcend the two.

In Beyond Perfection, another movie he acted in, Deza shows off his romantic side as he tries to make a life changing decision. While he is in love, he is also conscious of the effect his decision on who he would marry would take on his life.

Different roles, different interpretations, Deza The Great has been able to show the world the different side of his creativity. With more than twenty movies to his credit in 2024, there is no doubt that he has exceptionally shown to the world the mettle he is made off.

Idumota produced stars in the 2000s, right now it is the time for YouTube. And Deza The Great looks like the latest actors to be produced via the platform. His exceptional skill and talent has been uplifted, given the right amount of promotion via this platform. I hope he builds on this new accomplishment and makes a name for himself outside YouTube.
