Sofas in a living room

Your sofa is not only for sitting alone but also an aesthetic in your sitting room. Therefore, keeping it clean always is a must as a modern homeowner. Read on to discover tips that will keep your sofa clean and shining like you just bought it:

1. Set rules in the house

As Nigerians that we are, it’s common to see visitors and kids alike sitting on the sofas with raised legs. Consistently sitting this way will dirty the sofas and can quickly lead to tears. Set your rule to deter people from sitting with raised legs or even eating on the sofa. When your visitor sits with raised legs, politely tell them your rules. If you have pets, train them to avoid the sofa.

2. Vacuum frequently

Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, crumbs, and debris. Focus on crevices and seams where dirt tends to accumulate. Vacuuming weekly prevents buildup that can make your sofa look dull.

3. Clean up spills immediately

Blot spills with a clean, absorbent cloth to avoid stains. Avoid rubbing, as it can spread the stain. Use a mild detergent or upholstery solution recommended for your sofa’s material. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.

4. Get protective covers

Covers protect your sofa from everyday wear, spills, and pet hair. They’re easy to wash and swap out, keeping your sofa looking fresh without constant deep cleaning. Get a protective sofa that you desire and lay on the sofas to prevent frequent cleaning.

5. Rotate sofa positions regularly

Flip and rotate sofas regularly. If there is any wear and tear, you can distribute it evenly. Moreso, it increases the lifespan of your sofas since some positions allow for more sitting. Rotation also prevents sagging and maintains the sofa’s shape over time.

6. Deep clean periodically

Steam-clean fabric sofas or use a leather or recommended upholstery cleaner for leather types every three to six months. You can also ask the maker of your sofa for specific cleaning instructions or hire a professional cleaner if needed.

This year, 2025, give your sofa a little pampering to give your space a touch of newness.
