Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, on Wednesday, urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to remain calm following the earth tremor recorded in parts of Abuja.

Alake directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide him with hourly updates on the seismic activity for continuous review and, where necessary, escalation to relevant government agencies.

The minister, who is currently in Washington, D.C., United States, engaging American investors on joint venture proposals in the solid minerals sector, said proactive measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property.

He was reacting to an alert issued by the NGSA, which reported that tremors shook several buildings in Abuja on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

The NGSA Seismic Monitoring Station, Utako, recorded the earth tremor at exactly 11.23.27am, noting that it originated from a 1-kilometre depth and spread across a distance of four kilometres in five seconds.
However, the NGSA interpreted the tremor as a “light event of I to II magnitude on the Mercalli scale.”

He said: ” This is a characteristic feature of a surface earth tremor that poses no threat to lives and properties except for the discomfort of the shake and fear of possible destruction.”

In a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise, Alake assured residents that the NGSA would continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates.
