The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has mourned the death of the Sardaunan Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing him as a patriotic statesman whose decades of public service left a lasting impact on Nigeria.

Adebayo, in a condolence message issued on Thursday, said the death of the elder statesman at the age of 94 was a significant loss to the nation, noting that his contributions to governance and national development would be remembered for generations.

The SDP flag bearer said the late Alhaji distinguished himself through various leadership roles, including serving as Minister of Finance, Permanent Secretary and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

According to him, the deceased’s public service career was defined by integrity, wisdom and commitment to the advancement of the country.

He added that beyond his accomplishments in government, the late Sardaunan Sokoto played a vital role in preserving the values and traditions of the Sokoto Caliphate, earning respect across the country.

Adebayo extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultanate Council, the Sokoto State Government and Nigerians mourning the loss.

He prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and for strength and comfort for those affected by the loss.

The SDP presidential candidate said Alhaji Abubakar’s legacy of service, patriotism and leadership would continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians.
