Alex Agwanwor has been elected chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State. The election held yesterday. Agwangwor, who is from the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, vowed to protect the interest of workers in the state.

He emerged as the chairman unopposed, taking over from the former chairman and governorship candidate of Labour Party in the state, Mrs. Beatrice Itubo. Speaking to newsmen, the new chairman said he would emancipate workers in the state from draconian employers.

He also assured that he would engage all employers from private and public sectors to ensure the welfare of workers .

“For labour in Rivers State, there is new hope. The fight for the emancipation of workers in Rivers State from the hands of draconian and wicked employers and agencies will be pursued. As a leader of the congress, I will ensure the hope and confidence of workers in rivers state are restored.”

Earlier, the Deputy National President of NLC, Adeyanju Adewale, urged the new leadership to carry everybody along and ensure there is no room for crisis.

“Under the leadership of our National President, Joe Ajaero, hope has come to the labour movement.

“We are labour union, we are not politicians and we should not allow ourselves to be used by politicians. Our own is to protect the interest of workers.

“I also want to appeal to the new leadership not to be disconnected from the workers,” he said.
