Citizens hail Akwa Ibom sanitation law

Residents have hailed Governor Udom Emmanuel for signing into law the Akwa Ibom State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector Bill.

The latest of the commendations came from stakeholders at the 2nd Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Media Roundtable in Uyo.

Speaking at the event, organised by IbomWASH+, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, lauded the backing given to WASH Udom Emmanuel, as indicated by his assent to the bill. He emphasised the need for effective publicity and awareness creation on the imperatives of the law.

Ememobong, who was the special guest at the occasion, noted that water and sanitation are critical to the survival matrix and stressed the need for interpretation of the legal framework of the WASH sector law to the masses to enable them know their rights on issues pertaining to water resources, especially those in the rural communities.

Represented by the Director of Public Relations in the Ministry, Mrs. Grace Akpan, Ememobong commended IbomWASH+ for working towards the actualisation of the WASH Sector Law and congratulated members of Ibom WASH Media Committee for accepting to work for the benefit of the society.

In his welcome remarks, the Project Director of IbomWASH+, Prof. Gabriel Umoh, applauded the state government for signing the bill into law.

In a goodwill message, the Managing Director of Akwa Ibom Water Corporation, Edo Etuk, hinted that, with the law, the grey areas in the sector would be looked into towards improving water resources to meet the needs of the people.
