Consensus breakdown pushes Ex-IGP Usman Alkali Into yobe governorship race ahead of 2027

Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali

The race for the 2027 governorship election in Yobe State has taken a new turn following the entry of former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali, into the contest, a move triggered by the collapse of earlier consensus arrangements among aspirants.

Alkali confirmed his decision while speaking with journalists in Damaturu, noting that the emergence of multiple contenders had effectively ended efforts to present a unified candidate.

According to him, at least four other aspirants had already secured their nomination forms, an indication that the initial understanding among stakeholders could no longer be sustained.

“I therefore obtained the form to join the movement. No one has ever shown me where to sign or even asked me to speak,” Alkali said.

He stated that the development reinforced his position that the consensus model had failed to materialise in the state’s political process.

Providing further clarity, the former police chief explained that his interpretation of consensus was rooted in voluntary agreement among aspirants to rally behind a single candidate.

“That is the meaning of consensus. Now that this has not happened in Yobe, I have decided to go ahead with my ambition,” he said.

Alkali disclosed that he arrived in Damaturu over the weekend to verify the authenticity of his nomination documents, adding that he also reviewed party guidelines and consulted relevant stakeholders before making his decision public.

On the possibility of stepping down in favour of another aspirant, he maintained that such a decision would be conditional.

“I would, if I agree to the terms,” he said.
He also called on his supporters to remain committed as the political process unfolds, urging them to stay resolute regardless of how events shape the primary election timeline.

Alkali said they should stand by him irrespective of whether the primary election took place as scheduled or otherwise.
