Court remands four for trafficking one-year-old child in Rivers

A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded four persons to a correctional center in the state for allegedly abducting and trafficking a baby in Rivers State.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded four persons to a correctional center in the state for allegedly abducting and trafficking a baby in Rivers State.
 
In a charge sheet, marked PMC/1595c/2021, the four accused were alleged to have on April 14, 2020 at Umuojiohi community in Afara clan in Etche Local Council, abducted and trafficked one Precious Irechukwu, a one year and ten months old baby.
 
The accused, namely, Victoria John-Barile, Jennifer Osuji, Ugochukwu Kere, and Emmanuel Iwuh-Onyebuchi were arraigned on three-count charge of conspiracy and child trafficking.
   


The accused were alleged to have sold the baby to Chinyere and Chioma, whose surnames are yet to be revealed at the sum of N500,000, an offence punishable under the Criminal Code Law of Rivers State and Child Rights Act of the Federation.
   
However, the accused pleaded not guilty and were remanded by Chief Magistrate, Rita Oguguo to the Port Harcourt Correctional facility.
 
The magistrate adjourned the matter till November 17, 2021 for hearing.

IN another development, the management of FAD FM has confirmed the gruesome murder of its Efik language programme presenter, David Ekanem, popularly known as ‘Atiat Zion’ by suspected hoodlums in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.
 
Ekanem,  who was also a renowned Efik and English Master of Ceremony (MC) was stabbed and left to die by hoodlums on Saturday about 10:00a.m, while waiting to board a taxi.
   
The statement announcing his death was running on the Radio station in place of its popular Efik programme, which was anchored by the late presenter.
 
The Guardian gathered that he was attacked by hoodlums.
  
A reliable source said hoodlums were beating up a woman and when he tried to intervene they attacked and hacked him to death.
  
“Mr. David Ekanem aka ‘Itiat Zion’ was stabbed, while asking a group of boys to stop manhandling a woman at Ikot Ansa. They got angry that he asked them to stop beating the woman, so they stabbed him to death,” the source revealed.
  
The Police spokesperson, DSP Irene Ugbo could not be reached to confirm the incident.
 
However, a staff of the station said: “The family has informed the police of the incident, it is left for them to do their job.”
