Federal Government has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, charging members to begin immediate preparations for a successful commemoration.

Speaking at the inauguration of the committee on Tuesday at the SGF Conference Room, Shehu Shagari Complex, Abuja, Akume described Democracy Day as a significant occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices, resilience and determination of those who fought for the country’s democratic governance.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993, struggle and late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose sacrifice and commitment to democratic ideals led to the formal recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

According to the SGF, the democratic institutions and values being strengthened across the country today are built on the sacrifices of patriots who struggled to enthrone democratic rule.

Akume noted that the yearly celebration also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to democratic governance, institutional development and national progress.

He said this year’s event would enable the administration of President Bola Tinubu to highlight gains recorded in democratic consolidation, institutional reforms and socio-economic transformation despite prevailing challenges.

With just 10 days to the June 12 anniversary, the SGF urged members of the committee to commence work immediately to ensure the seamless execution of all approved programmes.

He stressed that, in line with the administration’s commitment to prudence and fiscal responsibility, activities for the celebration would be modest but impactful.

According to Akume, approved activities for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, President Tinubu’s address to a joint session of the National Assembly on the same day, and a Democracy Day Gala Night.
