Drama as Amosun’s candidate adopts Buhari for 2019 polls
It was drama galore yesterday as the Ogun State chapter of Allied Peoples Movement (APM), unveiled its gubernatorial candidate, Adekunle Akinlade for the 2019 election.
Governor Ibikunle Amosun had anointed him for the race under the All Progressives Congress (APC), but the national leadership of the party failed to recognise Akinlade.
He, together with some Amosun’s loyalists had defected from the APC to APM having been ‘robbed’ of the governorship candidature.
At the rally yesterday, Akinlade told a crowd at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, that the Ogun State electorate had resolved to resist extension of political hegemony to the state by ‘external forces’ and have resolved to vote the candidate of their choice next year.
He also declared that the party had adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate, describing the defections from APC to APM as ‘tortuous and challenging.’
“For about two months, we had to fight for the freedom of our people to freely choose the government of their choice. We had to contend with some forces that are determined to reverse the march to prosperity in Ogun State,” Akinlade said.
He promised to sustain Amosun’s mission to rebuild the state by improving on road infrastructure, health care delivery, education, rural development, agriculture and youth empowerment.
Akinlade expressed hope that with the people’s support, APM’s victory is assured in the 2019 election.
Speaking, National Chairman of APM, Yusuf Dantalle, also adopted Buhari’s Presidential candidature.
In his welcome address, Director General of the Campaign Council, Sarafa Tunji Ishola, described the crowd at the rally as acceptance of the new party.
Ishola, a former Minister of Mines and Steel, also expressed confidence that Akinlade would win the governorship election poll in the state.
This turnout shows where votes will go to in 2019. The people of Ogun State have spoken today and they have spoken well,” he said.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the APC in Ogun State has described APM’s endorsement of President Buhari, as a comic show and a Greek gift for which the President and the party should not be deceived.
In a statement yesterday, Oladunjoye said those behind the endorsement are “hiding behind one finger to reap where they did not sow.
“These characters are aware of the President popularity and they want to cash-in on that to promote their infant-party, but the President cannot be deceived by their antics.”
