The Federal Government has dismissed reports that the State of Kuwait recently imposed a fresh ban on the recruitment of Nigerian domestic workers, describing the claims as misleading.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the reported development was not a new restriction by the Kuwaiti government but a continuation of an earlier suspension initiated by Nigeria to safeguard the welfare of its citizens.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government explained that the Nigerian Embassy in Kuwait City had, several years ago, formally requested the suspension of the recruitment and deployment of Nigerian domestic workers pending the resolution of concerns over their welfare, protection and working conditions.

According to the ministry, the decision was taken to protect Nigerians seeking employment in Kuwait and should not be interpreted as a fresh ban imposed by the host country.

“The issue is not of a fresh ban imposed by the Kuwait authorities on Nigerian domestic workers, but rather a continuation of measures earlier adopted by the Embassy to ensure the safety, dignity, and rights of its citizens seeking employment abroad,” the statement said.

The Ministry noted that Nigeria and Kuwait remain committed to resolving outstanding labour and migration issues through diplomatic engagement.

It noted that officials of both countries would continue discussions aimed at establishing a mutually beneficial framework that guarantees fair recruitment practices, adequate legal protection and decent working conditions for Nigerian workers.

The statement added that competent authorities on both sides were working towards strengthening labour migration arrangements in a manner that protects the interests of workers while promoting bilateral cooperation.

The ministry also cautioned against the spread of unverified information, urging members of the public and the media to confirm reports through official channels before publication.

It warned that inaccurate reports could create unnecessary anxiety among Nigerians residing in Kuwait and their families back home.

The ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad while continuing diplomatic efforts to improve labour migration arrangements with partner countries.
