Fire consumes shanties, buildings
A fire outbreak from a shanty has consumed buildings and properties worth millions of naira in a Lagos estate located at Ikate, Salem Bus Stop, Lekki area of the state.
The Guardian gathered that the fire, which emanated from a shanty room, spread to other rooms, and adjoining buildings within the estate. Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the agency received distress calls via its Toll Free Emergency numbers 767/112 and activated the state’s emergency response plans.
According to him, the LASEMA Response Team from Lekki base arrived the incident scene, while, the elite LASEMA Fire Unit also responded from the its hub at Cappa base.
Oke-Osanyintolu, said on arrival of the team comprising, the Agency’s Fire Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Estate Fire Department and the Nigerian Police Force, it was observed that some shanties behind the estate were engulfed by fire.
He stressed that further investigation revealed that no life was lost at the incident, while no injury was sustained by responders. He said: “The fire has been brought under control and completely put out through joint effort of all responders at the scene. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but properties worth a fortune were destroyed by the fire.”
