A human rights group, the Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs) has lamented the maltreatment of 57 men who were arrested for alleged homosexuality and has sought an end to the injustice by the Nigerian police and legal system.

The 57 men were arrested exactly a year ago after the police received information that some youths were to be initiated into a Gay/Homosexual Club in Egbeda area of Lagos, an action contrary to Section 1 (1) of Same Sex Marriage Act 2014.

Speaking at a media briefing, Executive Director, TIERs, Xeenarh Mohammed, said, “We are calling for an end to the miscarriage of justice that has been done here in Lagos state, both by the police but also by the entire legal system. “They have been branded as criminals, paraded to the world, and have not had a chance to clear their name or to have any end to this.”
