Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested four in connection with alleged stealing and trafficking of a child for N500, 000.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Orlando Godson Ikeokwu, at the weekend in Owerri said the suspects were arrested after intensive investigation.
According to him, One Chinasa Ukaonu, had left her home with an eight-month pregnancy, ostensibly to stay with her brother. Findings by her husband, Promise, however revealed she had gone to a different place to sell the baby. On further inquiry, investigation revealed she had sold her baby, which she reported to have died, to one Chioma Amadi for N500, 000.
He said: “It is noteworthy that Chinasa Ukaonu left the house with an eight-month pregnancy on the pretense that she was going to stay awhile with her brother, who reside at Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Council. Upon investigation, the husband, one Promise Ukaonu discovered she wasn’t there.
“However, a month later he received a call that his wife had a stillborn. When he demanded to see the remains of the child, the wife told him that she wrapped it in a nylon bag and disposed of it. Not satisfied with the story, he reported the matter to the Police, which led to the arrest of Chinasa Ukaonu, who then confessed to have sold the child to Amadi Chioma for N500, 000, with the help of the two nurses, Esomonu Dorathy and Eke Catherine, who assisted her through the childbirth.
“However, the child has been recovered and investigation is at an advanced stage.”
