Katsina: Customs arrests four officers for shooting at commissioner’s convoy
Indication emerged yesterday that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has arrested four of its personnel in connection with shooting of the convoy of Katsina State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Yau Gwajo-Gwajo.
Gwajo-Gwajo’s convoy was shot on Tuesday morning, while travelling from Katsina to Daura enroute Mai’adua council area.
Though there was no life lost nor injuries sustained, a couple of vehicles in the commissioner’s convoy were allegedly hit by bullets.
It was also unclear why the officers opened fire at the commissioner’s convoy, but sources said they may have mistaken the convoy for smugglers.
The road, which links Katsina and neighbouring Niger Republic, is often used as a route by smugglers to ferry contraband into the country.
A senior security officer, who asked not to be named, said NCS officials had arrested four of its personnel in connection with the incident.
He said the officials fired at the convoy even when the driver of the vehicle being occupied by the commissioner was making attempts to park off the road after being flagged down.
