Three serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) yesterday died in a motor accident at Gobirawa village in Kankara Local Council of Katsina State.

The early morning accident, which occurred due to poor visibility during a heavy downpour, involved a green metallic Volkswagen Sharon bus with plate number MAN 45 AA, belonging to the state chapter of the National Association of Corps Members.
Although the states of origin of the victims were yet to be verified as at press time, it was however learnt that one of them, a male hailed from Anambra, while another, a female, was from Akwa Ibom.

It was also gathered that several persons, including three children, were injured in the incident.

Narrating what transpired, a survivor said they were traveling to Funtua council area for a Catholic mass wedding when the accident occurred.

He said the heavy rains made the road slippery, and that at a point when the driver tried to apply the brakes, the vehicle skidded off the road and bashed into a tree.

Confirming the development, the spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the state, Abdullahi Danladi, said besides the three casualties, 11 others got injured.

He listed the wounded to include three males, six females and two children.

The spokesman linked the cause of the accident to over-speeding.

Similarly, an ally of Governor Aminu Bello Masari, Saleh Danja, also yesterday lost his life on the road.

He was said to be traveling same time it was raining, thus resulting in his vehicle losing control at Tsanni settlement in Batagarawa council area.

The governor, who immediately paid a condolence visit to the family on hearing the news, stopped over at Gobirawa village to sympathise with victims of the first accident.

He offered an undisclosed amount of money and ordered the pilot Hilux vehicle in his convoy to convey the corps members along with the bodies to Katsina town.
