Lumina Fusion: Adehimself’s Afro-inspired collection

Lumina Fusion, the latest collection from Adehimself’s fashion brand, embodies the duality of tradition and contemporary sophistication.

The release of the collection was announced by the brand’s creative director and fashion designer/illustrator, Adewumi Adeyemi Obafemi on February 29, 2024.

The collection is a celebration of African style fused with modern tailoring. It features net sequined lace gowns with Florentine necklines, form-fitting shapes and bold back slits for the women, to wear alongside cool-coloured men’s native tops adorned with Ankara chest panels.

Adewumi’s profound technical skills in garment construction and illustration are evident throughout Lumina Fusion. The gowns show a strong understanding of structure and fit, strategically placing seams and darts to enhance the feminine shape. The stitching on the sequined lace is refined, ensuring the delicate fabric remains durable. However, some finishing details, such as the lining at the Florentine necklines, could have been neater, as they occasionally disrupted the fluidity of the designs.

The Ankara chest panels on the men’s native tops are well-drafted, with symmetrical patterns that align perfectly with the plain fabric base. But then, this incorporation feels common and non-innovative, leaving room for more creative interpretations of African prints in menswear.
The net sequined lace is luxurious and lightweight, providing the perfect foundation for feminine gowns. Similarly, the fabrics for the men’s native tops are crisp and breathable, ideal for both formal and semi-casual settings. Though present, care labels and brand tags lack the sophistication expected of a designer seeking global appeal. These details may seem minor, but they contribute to the overall impression of a collection.

The functionality of the outfits presents a mixed bag. The female wears are beautiful but delicate for regular wear, while the male wears are highly versatile but lack the boldness needed to make a statement.

Lumina Fusion’s lack of experimentation with detailing limits its ability to push boundaries. For instance, the back slits on the gowns could have been reimagined with asymmetrical cuts or layered fabrics to add depth. The collection is poised to appeal to an audience that values cultural elegance and craftsmanship. The gowns resonate with women seeking sophisticated attire for weddings, galas, and other formal occasions. The men’s tops cater to individuals who appreciate subtle nods to tradition in their wardrobe. The collection will perform moderately well in the market but may struggle to reach a broader audience because of its similarities to existing products.
