A man, simply identified as Chima, alongside his yet-to-be-identified female lover, allegedly used a machete to butcher his wife, Nwakaego, leaving her in a critical condition at Omerelu community in Ikwerre Local Council of Rivers State.

The victim’s elder brother, Anayo Warisi, alleged that Chima and his lover fled the crime scene on Monday afternoon, immediately they noticed that Nwakaego was lying motionless.

Warisi, in an interview, narrated that trouble started when Chima brought in his lover to their matrimonial home and when his wife queried his action, he, alongside his lover pounced on her with a machete.

He said: “My sister’s husband brought his female lover to the house and the wife had to ask him why he would bring his female lover to their house. That was how the husband and his lover started beating my sister, using a machete to cut all over her body, but that of her leg is more severe.

“When we got a distressed call, my elder sister and brother took her to a hospital at Elele, but she was rejected. So, they took her to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

“The husband is on the run currently, all we want is that he should be arrested because it is a case of attempted murder and if we let it lie low, he might do it again.”

Also, a rights group, the  Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

The group’s Secretary, Gladys Oyenmwen, said there is a need for a thorough investigation into the alleged use of a machete by the woman’s husband and his lover to cut the wife severely.

She added that domestic violence under any guise has no place in society and should not be condoned, irrespective of who is the perpetrator.

MEANWHILE,  spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident, yesterday, said the female lover of the woman’s husband had been arrested by Elele Police Division through the effort of the Commissioner of Police (CP), Eboka Friday.

Iringe-Koko said the CP has ordered that the case be transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt.
