The inhabitants of Gaba community in Lavun Local Council of Niger State have protested the selection of Alhaji Yusuf Gana as their new traditional ruler by Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.

The community in a statement signed by the Chairman, Gaba Development Association, Mr. Paul Gana stated that in the history of the community, the selection of their traditional ruler has never been subjected to the approval of an Emir.

In the statement made available to newsmen in Minna, yesterday, they noted that the popular candidate, who is the people’s choice, was jettisoned for an unpopular individual.

The statement read: “What has been the practice over the years was that whenever the traditional ruler of the community dies, there are 13 house units (Katamba) that usually come together to select or elect the successor, thereafter, they go ahead to formally notify the Emir.

“ This time around, there were two contenders and the process resulted in an election, which was done at the instance of the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar. The result was not made public, only for the Emir to announce to the people after three weeks that this is your new traditional ruler. This has never been the practice.”

The community, however, appealed for calm and asked people to shun any form of violence to allow the relevant authorities to do the needful.
