Traders at Olatunde Onimole Street, near Bakery Bus Stop, Surulere, Lagos, were left counting their losses yesterday after fire swept through two shops, destroying furniture, provisions and other goods worth millions of naira.

The shops, located at No. 19 Olatunde Onimole Street, were gutted by the early-morning blaze, prompting a swift response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Team, LRT Cobra Team, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA paramedics, the Nigeria Police and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps.

The joint operation brought the fire under control before it could spread further. However, the two shops were completely razed, with their contents destroyed. No death or injury was recorded.

In another incident, the LRT Tiger Squad at C3 responded to a road traffic accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Obalende, where a yellow commercial bus reportedly overturned following a tyre burst.

LASEMA paramedics and LASAMBUS personnel attended to the victims at the scene, providing immediate medical care before the operation was concluded and the team returned to base.

Also yesterday, the LRT Lion Squad, working with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Imota, responded to a fire outbreak at Adamo Bus Stop, Ikorodu.

Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started from an electrical spark that ignited the roof of a hairdressing shop before spreading to adjoining shops.

Three shops were affected, with goods and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

No life was lost and no injury was recorded.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and extinguished it, while dampening-down operations were carried out to prevent a possible re-ignition.

Meanwhile, at about 6:09 a.m. yesterday, the LRT Alpha Eagle Team responded to a tanker breakdown on Ilupeju Road, inward Cappa.

An empty tanker with an unknown registration number had developed a mechanical fault, obstructing traffic along the route.

With the support of the Nigeria Police and LASEMA’s recovery equipment, the tanker was successfully removed and taken to a lay-by, restoring normal traffic flow.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency had continued to demonstrate operational efficiency and effective inter-agency coordination through prompt responses to emergencies across the state.

He also urged residents to prioritise vehicle maintenance, comply with electrical safety standards and promptly report emergencies to LASEMA through the toll-free 767 and 112 emergency lines.
