Fire has razed the living room of a two-bedroom flat in an adjoining one-storey residential building near Moyosore Nursery and Primary School, Asubiojo Street, Olaogun area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency said the incident was reported at about 4:37 p.m. through a telephone call from one Mr. Olaolu, who alerted the agency to the fire.

According to the agency, a firefighting crew led by an Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) promptly mobilised to the scene.

It said on arrival, the crew discovered that the living room on the ground floor of the two-bedroom flat was engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the premises.

The firefighters immediately commenced operations and successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and neighbouring properties.

The agency said preliminary findings indicated that the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical appliance that was left plugged in and unattended in the affected living room.

It added that no casualty was recorded, while the fire affected only the living room.

The fire appliance returned safely to the station at about 5:40 p.m. and remained on standby, according to the agency.

The agency lauded personnel of the Nigerian Police from Olaogun Police Station for providing adequate security during the firefighting operation.

The Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr Moroof Akinwande, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and conscious of fire risks.

Akinwande also emphasised the importance of installing and maintaining functional extinguishers in commercial buildings, shops and households to enable residents and business owners tackle fire  outbreaks at their incipient stages.
