The Lagos State Government has commenced stakeholder engagement on proposed improvement works at Ikotun Junction, covering the intersection of Ijegun, Isolo and Idimu roads, as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and urban mobility.

The engagement, held at the weekend at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Secretariat, brought together government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, residents and other stakeholders.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, said the engagement underscored the government’s commitment to improving transportation and traffic management across the state.

Olumide said the proposed intervention would improve accessibility, reduce congestion and create a more organised environment for movement and commercial activities within the Ikotun axis.

He, however, stressed the need for proper utilisation and management of informal spaces within the project area after completion, noting that such spaces should be integrated into the overall planning of the area to sustain the benefits of the intervention and prevent a return to uncoordinated activities.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olawale Musa, identified roadside trading and other unregulated commercial activities as major contributors to persistent traffic congestion along the Ikotun axis.

Osiyemi said the project was part of the government’s broader efforts to address transportation challenges and improve the quality of life of residents.

He assured stakeholders whose properties or legitimate interests might be affected by the project of adequate compensation in line with government policies and procedures.

He also appealed to affected persons, community leaders and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government to ensure the smooth and timely execution of the project.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Olayinka Adebayo Wasiu, also urged stakeholders to work with the government and project consultants, stressing that their support and constructive participation were essential to completing the project within the expected timeframe.

Chairman of Igando/Ikotun LCDA, Senior Comrade Lasisi Ayinde Akinsanya, commended the state government for the intervention, describing it as a timely response to the transportation and environmental challenges confronting the community.

Similarly, the Onikotun of Ikotun Kingdom, HRM Oba Azeez Gbadabiu Asiwaju, welcomed the proposed works and pledged the cooperation of the traditional institution and residents.

He also called for continuous engagement with stakeholders throughout the implementation.

The stakeholders acknowledged the importance of the project to the socio-economic development of the area, particularly its potential to reduce congestion, improve connectivity and create a more orderly environment for residents, businesses and commuters.

They also raised concerns and offered suggestions aimed at minimising disruption during construction.
