Police escort burnt alive in Ogun auto crash

A police officer attached to an escort van was burnt to death in an auto crash that occurred at the Iyana Obafe axis of the Sagamu–Siun–Kabape–Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.

Three other persons sustained injuries in the accident involving a bullion van belonging to Bemil, two Toyota Hilux escort vehicles and a silo truck with registration number KRD 945 YL.

The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday.

He said four persons were involved in the crash, which occurred on Saturday inbound Siun around the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along the highway.

According to him, three persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while one person was burnt alive in the accident. Akinbiyi explained that the crash occurred when the driver of the truck drove against traffic and collided with one of the escort vehicles, resulting in the death of the police officer attached to the escort team.

He added that operatives of TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Amotekun Corps were at the scene for rescue operations.

The TRACE spokesperson noted that the injured victims were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) by some good Samaritans, while the remains of the deceased officer were deposited at the Owode Egba General Hospital morgue.
