Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a 52-year-old man, Ndibe Jude Onyenwe, over his alleged involvement in conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, grievous harm and murder in Urum, Awka North Local Council.
The suspect was handed over to the command on February 5, 2026, by operatives of the 302 Artillery Regiment, Nigerian Army Cantonment, Onitsha.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Onyenwe allegedly conspired with one Felix Godwin and others still at large to sponsor armed men who carried out a violent ambush along a road in Urum, targeting unsuspecting members of the public.
According to Ikenga, six persons sustained serious bullet injuries during the attack.
He said preliminary interrogation revealed that Godwin allegedly paid N500,000 through an Access Bank account to hire four gunmen from Ayamelum Local Council, alongside one Emeka, whose surname was not given and who was said to have led the operation in Urum.
Ikenga added that Godwin also mobilised Onyenwe with N350,000 for the purchase of four packets of cartridges allegedly used in the attack.
The police said the suspect was undergoing further interrogation, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend other suspects.
The command assured residents that further developments would be communicated and reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring justice.
