Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Aba Chapter, in recognition of the outstanding contributions of Engr. Dr. Ugochukwu Ifediora to engineering advancement and capacity development in Nigeria, has honoured him with the Award of Excellence in Engineering Innovation and Training.
The award, presented during the inauguration and induction ceremony of Engr. Ekeoma George as the chapter’s second Chairman in Abia State, themed “Rebuilding Together for Sustainable Growth: A Call to Unity and Shared Commitment.”
The event marked a significant moment for the engineering community, combining a leadership transition with recognition of professionals who have made notable impacts in their fields. Highlights of the ceremony included the induction of new members, presentation of awards to distinguished engineers, and strategic discussions focused on the future of engineering practice and its role in national development.
NIMechE, a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, continues to play a central role in advancing mechanical engineering practice across the country through professional development, certification, mentorship, and promotion of innovation. The Aba Chapter has particularly gained recognition as a vibrant hub in Southeast Nigeria, driving initiatives that align with sustainable development and industrial growth.
Dr. Ifediora was among a select group of honourees, with his award specifically acknowledging his impact in engineering innovation and capacity building. A seasoned engineer and entrepreneur, he is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fedironics Intelligent Metering Company Limited, an indigenous technology firm focused on smart electricity metering solutions and advanced metering infrastructure.
With over 15 years of experience in Nigeria’s electricity value chain, Dr. Ifediora has established himself as a leading voice in smart grid innovation and energy systems. His work spans power sector reforms, deployment of smart metering technologies, and the integration of digital infrastructure into energy management.
His flagship invention, the Fedironics iMeter, an IoT-enabled smart electricity meter, is designed to improve billing accuracy, enhance grid transparency, reduce energy losses, and enable real-time monitoring of electricity consumption.
He has played an active role in developing young engineers and technicians, collaborating with academic institutions and industry stakeholders, and contributing to international engineering development programmes. His involvement with the Royal Academy of Engineering, including initiatives such as the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation and the Higher Education Partnership for Sub-Saharan Africa, has further strengthened engineering capacity and fostered innovation across the region.
Dr. Ifediora’s contributions have also attracted global recognition, earning him awards such as the Silver Medal at the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation and a Telecom World Recognition Award from the International Telecommunication Union, alongside multiple research grants and innovation accolades. His work continues to impact industries, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and advance sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria.
In his keynote address at the ceremony, Dr. Ifediora emphasised the evolving role of engineering in national development, stating that engineering must extend beyond technical execution to drive economic growth, ensure energy security, and deliver sustainable solutions for society.
He called for stronger collaboration among government, industry, and academia to rebuild Nigeria’s industrial base, highlighting cities like Aba as critical to achieving sustainable industrial transformation.
