National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

The federal government has been commended for sustaining the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) despite challenges faced since it was established more than 50 years ago to date.

The Coordinator of the NYSC in Katsina State, Mr. Okwor Evans, stated this on Friday during the 53 anniversary celebration of the scheme by staff and corp members in the state.

Evans described the anniversary as a moment of joy and appreciation, noting that the NYSC has remained one of Nigeria’s most enduring institutions since its establishment in 1973 during the era of Gen. Yakubu Gowon.

The state coordinator noted that the relevance of the NYSC cannot be underestimated in nation building and integration, with call on corps members and staff of NYSC to maintain and sustain the ideals of the scheme.

He also called corps members to remain committed during their service year, and to ensure their actions reflect what they learnt during their Orientation.

During the celebration, corps members were sensitized on the history and objectives of the scheme, including its role in national unity, reconstruction, reconciliation and rehabilitation.

The importance of Community Development Service (CDS), Skills Acquisition, and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme were also highlighted.

The scheme also held a colourful procession in the heart of the metropolitan area, which culminated with the cutting of the 53 anniversary cake.
