As part of its efforts to find lasting solutions to the gas emission in some school premises around Ijebu-Ode axis of Ogun State, the State Government has engaged experts on earth surface, as well as experts from the midstream and downstream sector.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, disclosed this during an engagement with experts from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and Geological experts from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
Arigbabu said that the Governor Dapo Abiodun had instructively gave his nod to ensure that a lasting solution was reached to forestall any future occurrence, hence, the invitation of the established professionals.
He stressed that there had been several measures put in place by the government before now, such as the installation of CCTV cameras and air analysers, clearing of bushes, erection of perimeter fencing and ambulances stationed with paramedics to tackle the challenges of the gas leakage in those affected areas to avoid the interruption of the academic calendar.
The Commissioner assured the public that government would continue to take further actions to ensure teaching and learning were done in a conducive environment, imploring parents, guardians, learners and teachers to remain calm and shun any rumour that could aggravate tension or pandemonium as normalcy would soon be returned to the schools affected.
“In continuation of our efforts to tackle the problem of gas emissions, we decided to come with the experts from the NMDPRA, Ministry of Environment and Earth Science Department of Olabisi Onabanjo University all these experts are on field helping us to investigate what happened.”
‘’These experts are in the field following the instructions of the Governor. We have commissioned them to help us look into what is happening and the preliminary reports indicate that there’s a sort of geological infraction which needs further investigation,’’ he said.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of NMDPRA, Dr. Atilola Simeon, said he appreciated the kind of values the present administration had placed on the lives of children, especially what had to do with learners, promising to do thorough research into the matter and come up with a detailed study and technical advice for lasting solutions.
