Ondo State Police Command has apprehended the killer of a bread seller, Ojomo Tunji, who was allegedly shot dead by a security guard attached to NNPC Petrol Station at Shagari Village Junction, Akure.

The police disclosed yesterday that the suspect, Jonah Sunday, committed the crime last Wednesday and he was arrested immediately by the men of the command.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, said the command has started to investigate the case.

“We were told the suspect was shooting into the air. We don’t know the reason for that. May be he was suspecting something, but unfortunately, as he was shooting, the bullets hit one of the people selling bread beside the filling station.”

He said the victim was rushed to the hospital where he died, and the family of the victim reported the case to the police.

Joseph also disclosed that the command has arrested four sea pirates in Ilaje Local Council of the state.

But he did not reveal the identity of the four suspects for security reason, adding nonetheless that some dangerous weapons were recovered from them, which included gun and live cartridges.

In a related development, a middle-aged man identified as Raphael, has allegedly hacked his neighbour and septuagenarian, Mr. Kayode Omotore, to death.

The incident occurred at Ilutitun, an ancient town in Okitipupa Local Council of Ondo State on Friday. The deceased’s wife, Johannah, was also attacked.

The Guardian learnt that the deceased and the alleged killer had recurrent arguments over a bonfire always set near Omotore’s house. The former complained that the smoke was causing some inconveniences and this did not infuriated the suspect.

It was learnt that the last fight between the two neighbours was prolonged because there was none to settle the rift, save another neighbour, who ran into them when Raphael was hitting the deceased and his wife with a cutlass.

“Omotore had warned the suspect not to be making bonfire beside his house because the smoke always affected his family. He complained several times.

“On Friday, the same issue came up again and before we knew it, Raphael hacked the old man with a machete till he died. The deceased’s wife, who was trying to prevent her husband from the attack, also had some of her fingers chopped off by the suspect.”
Meanwhile, another source claimed the suspect was mentally-deranged and has psychotic problems.

The incident irked some youths in the town and Raphael’s house was set ablaze.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and said the suspect had been arrested.

According to him, “Investigation had begun but we have arrested the suspect. The deceased was a neighbour to the suspect. Some people are saying he has a mental problem but that does not mean we should not do our own work.

“ Angry mob in the town went to the suspect’s house and burnt it down.”

Joseph disclosed that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary, while the wife is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
