Prepare yourselves to take over leadership, Buhari tells youths
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja called on youths in Nigeria to prepare themselves for political leadership as his generation will eventually quit the scene for the younger ones to takeover.
Receiving the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing led by the Acting National Leader, Kingsley Dozie Lawrence, President Buhari described Nigerian youths as very active and critically important in the Nigerian project.
‘‘Youths are very virile and active. A greater part of the Nigerian population is made up of youths. They must always be a factor at all times.
‘‘Youths must begin to groom themselves for the leadership of Nigeria.
‘‘I said this to the leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students yesterday (Thursday) – sooner than later we will leave the stage and you will takeover. You have to equip yourselves properly,’’ he said.
The President commended the group for appreciating his administration’s efforts in providing the much-needed infrastructure across the country and for ensuring that Nigerians celebrated the Yuletide with the availability and price stability of petroleum products.
‘‘I am glad you appreciate government’s efforts. That is why we are here to make a difference in the lives of Nigerians and on infrastructure. We will ensure that the resources of Nigeria work for Nigerians,’’ he said.
On the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the President expressed the hope that ‘‘good reason will prevail’’ in the on-going talks between the Federal Government and representatives of the union.
Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing hailed the Buhari administration for stabilising the economy, improved security during the Christmas season and sustaining the development of infrastructure, particularly the Second Niger Bridge.
‘‘We, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing, are partners-in-progress in the Nigerian Project and will extend hands of partnership to any administration that guarantees the interest and welfare of Ndigbo.
‘‘There’s no gainsaying the fact that President Buhari’s administration has impacted the Igbos in some positive ways, but there are still areas the Igbos need more impacts,’’ he said.
The Youth leader, therefore, appealed to the President to make a categorical statement on the issue of Igbo Presidency in 2023, in addition to initiating a process for the creation of an additional state in the South-East, among others.
Meanwhile, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council with the Coalition of Igbo groups and Biafra agitators yesterday said that those Igbo youths that visited President Muhammad Buhari are not members of Ohanaeze youths but are impostors. In a statement after their meeting in Abakaliki, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said that those impostors that visited President Buhari yesterday are not members of Ohanaeze Youths but were handpicked by a senator desperately willing to sell Igbo land in 2019 because of oil bloc.
The statement reads “We received news of impostors who visited President Buhari today as not members of Ohanaeze Youths, but were handpicked by a senator desperately wishes to sell Igbo land in 2019 because of oil bloc”.
The statement reads in part, “Ime Obi Ohanaeze is not aware of the visit. We have sanctioned those who visited and paraded themselves as Ohanaeze youths, no such time did Ohanaeze youths approved such meeting.
“We are aware of some clandestine meetings by some Igbo leaders who have never voted since 1999 elections and are now planning to sell Igbo land through vote buying for a particular presidential candidate in 2019 against the popular demand of Ndigbo.
“The demand is that the presidential candidates should sign an agreement with Igbo leaders and Traditional rulers on their sincerity over 2023 Igbo Presidency Project, instead, some Igbo leaders are hoping on vote buying to deliver a particular Presidential Candidate.
“We will continue to advocate for non-violence in the 2019 election, and we will continue to protect political interest of Ndigbo against political saboteurs, whose interest is to enrich themselves without giving leadership to Ndigbo, we are watching them keenly.”
