Properties worth millions of naira were burnt to ashes following a fire, which gutted a Magistrate’s court building in Ebonyi State.

Sources said the fire, which started early on Monday morning emanated from a transformer.

The Guardian gathered that the fire started from the building attached to Magistrate Court Registrar’s office, which affected seized properties parked inside the court premises.

Confirming the incident, Chief Registrar of the state’s high court, Nnenna Onuoha, estimated the cost of destroyed materials at about N40 million.

She said: “In the early hours of June 3, we got calls from people living at the Magistrate’s quarters that our court has been gutted by fire.

“We rushed out to see that the court was truly engulfed by fire. Upon enquiry of the cause, we were told that the fire started from the transformer.

“The fire was eventually put out by rescuers from Ebonyi State Fire Service. As you can see, the building was completely razed down.”

A Magistrate, who conducted newsmen around the burnt building, said he and some staff members living near the Magistrate Court premises were woken from sleep by the fire.

“We were woken up by the inferno. We are living close to the court premises. We came and started using our fire extinguishers to put out the fire. I shot one of the extinguishers and the fire exploded and got more serious.

“By this time, our security men ran away. We contacted the state’s fire service and they came and help us to put out the fire. Before their arrival, we have exhausted our fire extinguishers,” he stated.
