With over 10 years of industry experience in various roles both at home and abroad including his role as Network Security Engineer at APD IT solutions in the United Kingdom, where he developed an innovative threat management system to identify and mitigate potential cyber threats as well as optimized the organization’s firewall, Akinkunle Akinloye is leading efforts to safeguard the nation’s communication networks infrastructure.

“I don’t think we can mention a modern society and not mention communication networks. It is the backbone that allows for effective functioning of government, healthcare, finance, media, and transportation, to mention a few. Any disruption or compromise to these networks could have far-reaching consequences, jeopardizing not only the privacy and security of individuals but also the stability of the entire nation.” He said.

As NSMC Satellite NOC Engineer, overseeing MTN’s national satellite, Akinkunle’s crucial role involves monitoring and management of MTN’s national satellite to ensure optimal broadband connectivity for subscribers across all sectors of the economy. His role ensures up-to-date preparedness against possible cyberattacks, as well as physical or otherwise damage to the national satellite. With increasing cyberattack reports in the country in the past year alone, Akinkunle’s work in ensuring continued security of the communication network is more vital than ever.

“Every part of the economy is linked via communication networks. For instance, if there was a disease outbreak in the country or a national security emergency, the only way to ensure that information gets out quickly is through functional communication systems. Therefore, protecting this crucial infrastructure is paramount to ensuring national security, economic stability and overall societal welfare.” He stated.

In addition to his technical contribution to ensuring the security of the national communications satellite, Akinkunle emphasized the need for collaboration with the government and other industry stakeholders to ensure security in the communication networks.

“Every second counts,” Akinkunle explains. “Protecting communication networks is not just the role of experts. The Federal Government, industry leaders and citizens have an equally important role to play in protecting communication network infrastructure”.

As technology continues to advance and society becomes increasingly reliant on digital communication, Akinkunle’s message is clear. Communication networks ensure economic continuity and security in the nation and its protection is not just the duty of the federal government or professionals and agencies but the collective effort of individuals in the nation.

Through his efforts, Akinkunle Akinloye has set a high standard for the protection of communication network infrastructure. His work not only helps to secure Nigeria’s communications but also contributes to the broader global effort to safeguard critical infrastructure against the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats.
