Singa Market Fire: Kano constitutes committee for disbursement of N8 billion intervention

Kano State Government has constituted a 23 high-level committee to oversee the disbursement of financial support and relief materials to victims of Singa Market fire outbreak.

The fire disaster that hit several sections of the market on two consecutive occasions left a devastating economic lose to several traders whose valueables consumed in the inferno.

The gravity of the ugly incident had sooner attracted the intervention of Mr. Bola Ahmad Tinubu who disclosed N5 billion naira cash as palliative to traders who lose their capitals.

Similarly, the incident also attracted N3 billion intervention from the Progressives Governors to relieve the victims of the outbreak.

Earlier, the victims of the Singa market fire outbreak have secured the N200 million cash support from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin to ameliorate their pains.

At the Inauguration of the committee on Tuesday, Secretary to the state government SSG, Alh Umar Faruq explained that the committee is responsible for equitable disbursement of the cash to affected traders.

The SSG, who was represented by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Abdulkarim Maude SAN said members of the committee are carefully selected across various sectors to deliver credible on the special state assignment.

According to him, the 23 members under the leadership of SSG are expected to the transparent, accountable and ensure equitable disbursement of the resources.

The Attorney General said the committee is entrusted to identify the extent of damage, material and capital lose and develop disbursement plan to the victims.

He added that the committee is also expected to evaluate the entire market, challenges and suggest solution to incessant fire incidences in the market.

The Commissioner of Justice reminded that part of the terms of reference are timely disbursement of the palliative and constant communication with stakeholders and the media for transparency and trust.

Membership of the committee include commissioners, representatives of Kano State Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Police Force the Department of State Services, the Kano Emirate Council, religious leaders and delegates of the affected traders are also part of the committee.

Chairman of Kano Traders Association,  Alhaji Sabi’u Bako, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the prompt response to the tragedy and the well-organized framework put in place for distributing assistance.

Bako who is also a member of the committee commended the Federal Government for sending a special delegation to Kano to sympathize with the affected traders.

Alhaji Sabi’u Bako pledged  that the committee will discharge their responsibilities with sincerity and fairness, stressing the need to prioritize the welfare of those who suffered losses in the inferno.

Although, Bako said the level of damage and numbers affected traders is not known yet, he insisted that the committee will ensure only the affected traders get the intervention.
