The Aweleka Social Club of Nigeria has expanded its scholarship programme in partnership with Harvest Haven Farms Nigeria Limited, awarding full academic scholarships to over 100 primary and secondary school students for the 2025/2026 academic session.
At the award ceremony held in Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area, the club announced that beneficiaries were selected based on financial need from 17 schools in the community and one school in Lagos — Oore Ofe Primary School, Agege.
Some of the benefiting schools include Ngwu Mixed Secondary School, Comprehensive Secondary School, Abuanor Primary School, Onihe Primary School, Nwaeze Primary School, and Royal Foundation Primary School, among others.
Club President, Mr. Obi Kevin Onyetonekwu, said the initiative, now in its third year, reflects the club’s mission to support underprivileged but academically promising students.
“The scholarship covers all educational expenses, including levies, uniforms, bags, textbooks, notebooks, sandals, exam fees, extra lessons, and WAEC/GCE enrolments,” Onyetonekwu said. “We currently support 104 primary school pupils and four secondary school students, with some past beneficiaries now in the university.”
Speaking on behalf of Harvest Haven Farms, Mr. Lucky Nwaolise, representing Chairman Mr. Chiedu Sylvester Okafor, announced the inclusion of vocational training support to equip beneficiaries with practical skills.
“Our goal is to empower the next generation of leaders, innovators, and decision-makers, regardless of the challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector,” Nwaolise said.
The club also used the occasion to call on the Delta State Government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector, citing poor infrastructure and inadequate facilities in public schools.
“Many of the schools we visited are in a state of disrepair. Toilets are nonexistent in some areas, and classrooms are falling apart,” the club stated, urging the government to prioritize funding and infrastructure development.
Head Teacher of Onihe Primary School, Mrs. Ada Eboji, expressed appreciation on behalf of parents and educators, saying the programme has rekindled hope and interest in learning.
“We, as teachers, pledge to provide closer guidance and mentorship to ensure these students make the most of this opportunity,” she said.
