Stakeholders in the telecommunications sector yesterday cautioned against multiple taxes in the industry, saying reduction of levies by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will encourage more investments in the sector.

They also sought immediate sanitisation of the regulatory sector to enable it to perform optimally and asked other regulatory agencies in the country to emulate the commission.

A lecturer at the University of Lagos, Professor Abiola Sanni, who commended the reduction of class license fees from N250,000 to N10,000, during a South East stakeholders meeting in Enugu, asked other government regulators to follow suit.

Speaking on Optimising Benefits of Telecoms Infrastructure in Nigeria, he condemned multiple taxes and levies imposed by regulators, saying they had outlived their usefulness.

He challenged stakeholders to sustain advocacy for curbing exorbitant, arbitrary and oppressive charges by government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
