The Taraba State Government has postponed the golden jubilee celebration of Zing Local Council Area and the 10th anniversary of the Lamdo Gashaka over the worsening insecurity and its possible impact on public gatherings.
The Guardian learnt that the events were earlier scheduled for October 29 and 31, 2026, respectively, but were postponed after a recent attack on Binari Village in Karim-Lamido Local Council Area, and the ongoing military operations around Gashaka-Gumti National Park in Gashaka Local Council.
In a statement, the Taraba State Security Committee said the decision was taken in consultation with the state government, in response to the prevailing security issues.
This comes as an indigene of Wurkun, Atiku Mohammed, has appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas to visit Binnari community in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area to commiserate with the families of last Friday’s attack.
Mohammed, in an open letter to the governor, expressed concern at what he described as recurring killings of Wurkun people and called for urgent measures to protect residents and bring perpetrators to justice.
The letter also raised concern over the alleged killing of a young man identified as Freedom, who was murdered by unidentified assailants around the Salakan area about three days after the Binnari attack.
The letter further expressed disappointment at the attention being accorded to political activities amid these occurrences, especially the All Progressives Congress’ campaign flag-off in Kaduna State a day after the Binnari attack.
