Following an executive order from President Donald Trump, all refugees’ travel to the United States has being suspended.

This means that refugees with permission to enter America will not be allowed in, and the processing of new cases is now suspended.

This is just as federal agencies are putting diversity staff, which represents 800,000 federal workers on paid leave “immediately”.

The Office of Personnel Management in its memo which outlined the Trump administration’s ambitions for diversity, inclusion and equity (DEI), stated that federal employees who work for DEI offices are to be put on paid leave immediately as the agency takes steps to end all DEIA initiatives, offices and programs by end of January.

In an executive order issued on Tuesday, Trump also called for an end to the “dangerous, demeaning and immoral” programmes.

Trump also directed U.S. prosecutors to criminally probe state and local officials who resist immigration enforcement, intensifying a sweeping crackdown he launched on Monday.

In a memo, Trump’s acting deputy attorney general, Emil Bove, wrote, “Federal law prohibits state and local actors from resisting, obstructing or otherwise failing to comply with lawful immigration-related commands and requests.”

Trump declared illegal immigration a national emergency, tasking the U.S. military with border security, issuing a broad ban on asylum and taking steps to restrict citizenship for children born on American soil.

A U.S. official said on Wednesday the military would dispatch 1,000 additional active-duty troops to the Mexico-U.S. border.

Americans are sharply divided on Trump’s plans for mass deportations. A new Reuters survey showed 39% agreed with that “illegal immigrants should be arrested and put in detention camps while awaiting deportation hearings,” while 42% disagreed and the rest unsure.
