Violence mar Delta Governorship, Assembly elections


Violence, ballot box snatching and late commencement of the exercise marred the Governorship and House of Assembly election across Delta State.

As early as 8:50am, mayhem was unleashed at Oleh, Isoko South Council, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ward Chairman, Vincent Egbogbo, allegedly stabbed by thugs.

Thugs also allegedly made away with electoral materials of Ward 13 Unit 5 and 7 of Isoko Council. In Afiesere, Ughelli North council, four APC supporters were hospitalised after suspected thugs allegedly brutalised them.


PDP youth leader in Ughelli North council, Rex Ekiugbo Anighoro accused House of Assembly aspirant of going round the council with armed men and snatching ballot boxes.

Also, Hon Evans Ivwurie, a PDP House of Assembly member, seeking re-election, protested against alleged snatching of ballot boxes in Unit 2, Abraka and Ward 2, Otorho Primary School, respectively.

At Uvwie Local Government, which witnessed several killings before the elections, accreditation started at some polling units at 8:34 pm. At Osubi, Okpe Local Council, Delta State Speaker, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori’s base, materials arrived early and was set at 8:51am.

INEC Electoral Officer, Warri South, Mrs. Grace Okah, said most of the materials left for their various wards as early as 6am. She said, “All materials left for the various polling units, except for Ward 8 and 9, which were later moved.”
