We must invest in quality education — Peter Obi, Don
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party and Pro-Chancellor of Dominican University, Peter Obi, has said that investing in education is the key to nation-building and human capital development.
He disclosed this during the joint first and second convocation ceremony of Dominican University, Ibadan.
Obi noted that the greatest gift of the nation is to invest in education in order to change the world and build the country.
He urged the graduands to be good ambassadors of the university and Nigeria. “You have no other country aside Nigeria, you can help us to make it work and to be a better country. If you work hard, you can become anything globally and change the world.”
The guest speaker and Chairman, Globus Bank Limited, Peter Amangbo, in his lecture titled, “Let Your Education Count” said that under the current socio-economic circumstances in Nigeria, the youths should make optimum use of their education.
He noted that low literacy and low level of education slow down development and remain a major obstacle to socio-economic transformation, which is a major problem confronting most underdeveloped countries and has resulted in low productivity and breeds poverty.
“Education is a major industry in many developed countries. The revenue potential from international students alone is more than the revenue from natural resources, which most countries survive on and that are why international students are attracted to quality teaching, industrial linkage, and post-study work visa among others.
Similarly, the university’s vice-chancellor, Hyginus Ekwuazi, urged the government to invest in all duly accredited institutions that expend their resources in manpower creation for the nation.
