2027: Obi’s NDC Discloses ₦6.13bn War Chest, Seeks More Funds for Campaign

NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed that it retained about ₦6.13 billion from ₦8.53 billion in reported financial inflows, while appealing to members and supporters to contribute more funds as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Treasurer, Dr Peter Onigah, revealed the figures at its third National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday, where he said the NDC had spent approximately ₦2.40 billion on its activities.

The disclosure provides a glimpse into the party’s financial position as it builds its structures and prepares for the political contest ahead, with its leadership insisting that accountability and prudent spending would guide the management of its resources.

Onigah said the party had deliberately avoided exhausting the funds available to it, adding that its financial decisions were guided by the experience of its officials, advice from national leaders and the National Working Committee.

“We have been very prudent. Our chief is made up of technocrats, people who are experienced and people who have different capacities,” he said.

The treasurer assured members that the party would provide a detailed breakdown of its financial transactions as it approaches the end of its first accounting year.

He also urged Nigerians to support the party financially, arguing that the NDC needed additional resources to sustain its operations because it had yet to control government at any level.

“As a new party, we don’t have people in government yet. All of us are outside the government. So we need to contribute together and ensure that our party will prevail and achieve the desired objectives,” Onigah said.

His appeal underscored the financial demands facing the party as it expands its organisational structures and prepares for election campaigns, nomination processes and other political activities ahead of 2027.

Although the reported ₦6.13 billion balance represents a substantial reserve, the party’s leadership said it would require further contributions to meet its future commitments.

Senator Victor Umeh, who spoke at the meeting, commended the leadership for presenting its financial statement and retaining more than ₦6 billion from the reported inflows.

Umeh described the balance as seed money for the party’s future activities but cautioned that it would not be enough to cover all its organisational and electoral needs.

He said the funds had been raised through contributions from party members rather than external sources, while urging supporters to help strengthen the party’s financial base.

The senator also called for consideration of established political party funding practices, including contributions from state chapters and other stakeholders, particularly during election and nomination periods.

He maintained that sustained financial support would be necessary for the NDC to pursue its political ambitions and implement its programmes.

Earlier, the party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, delivered the opening remarks at the NEC meeting, which also provided an opportunity for the leadership to review its finances and discuss organisational priorities.

The financial disclosure comes as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, when funding will be critical to nationwide mobilisation, campaign operations and the expansion of party structures.

While the NDC has pledged transparency in managing its resources, the promised detailed breakdown of transactions will provide further insight into how the reported ₦8.53 billion was raised and how the ₦2.40 billion expenditure was allocated.
