2027: Renaissance movement decry alleged muzzling of opposition by Tinubu, Wike

Ahead of the 2027 poll, the African Renaissance Movement has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of muzzling the opposition political parties in the country.

In a statement on Monday, Convener of the group, Dr. Aliyu Audu, claimed that President Tinubu is working in cahoots with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, the National Assembly and segments of the ruling class to perpetrate the unwholesome act.

Audu, who recently resigned his position as Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Public Affairs, contended that the liberalisation of the economy without political pluralism is an illusion.

He stressed that the heartbeat of a free market lies in the contestation of ideas, the exchange of diverse ideologies, and the protection of dissenting voices, adding that when the political space shrinks, the economic space contracts with it.

“The implication is profound: not only do we lose jobs, we lose innovation, morale, and the soul of democratic governance. We warn that a monopolised political order breeds monopolistic economic tendencies. And a silenced opposition cripples the moral and spiritual fabric of a nation,” he noted.

“The democratic framework that supports multi-party elections, open dialogue, and internal political competition is not merely about ballots; it is the engine of wealth redistribution, inclusive governance, and spiritual accountability.

“The Tinubu-Wike axis, if unchecked, threatens to upend this balance. Their apparent mission to decimate opposition and suppress civic dissent is a regression into authoritarian rule with far-reaching consequences for our economy, governance, and national morality.”

He thereby called on civil society, the judiciary, religious and traditional leaders, the media, and all well-meaning Nigerians to rise within the bounds of the law and defend the nation’s democracy from spiritual erosion and constitutional collapse.

“This is not just a political issue, it is a moral reckoning,” he stressed.
