The Enugu State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has debunked allegations linking the party leadership and the administration of Governor Peter Mbah to recent political violence in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.
Opposition political parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at the weekend accused the APC and government in the state of sponsoring violence, especially in Nkanu West local government, home of the PDP and NDC governorship candidates.
The allegations followed the disruption of ward meetings of the PDP and NDC in two wards of the council area by alleged gun weilding hired thugs, where some attendees sustained injuries with canopies and chairs destroyed.
In a statement however, the APC described the allegations as misleading, unsubstantiated, and politically motivated fabrications engineered to undermine the prevailing peace in the state.
The party stated that the accusations were inconsistent with the peaceful, law-abiding, and democratic disposition of both the APC and Governor Mbah’s administration.
The statement issued onbehalf of the APC Enugu State Chairman, Dr Martin Chukwunweike, by the state Publicity Secretary, Uche Obute, emphasised that political disagreements must always be expressed within the boundaries of civility and the rule of law.
”The APC Enugu State Chapter unequivocally rejects these allegations. It is particularly unfortunate that opposition actors would exploit an unfortunate incident to create unnecessary tension, damage hard-earned reputations, or undermine the peace and stability of Enugu State”, it said
Obute noted that robust competition remains a legitimate feature of democracy, but warned against using character assassination and misinformation as political tools.
The party highlighted Governor Mbah’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law, order, and security across all twenty-seven local government areas of the state since assuming office.
”Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has consistently demonstrated a commitment to peace, security, law, and order
“As a lawyer and Chief Executive of Enugu State, he understands the supreme importance of protecting the lives and property of citizens while creating an environment conducive to development and prosperity”, Obite added
The APC stressed that it remains difficult to reconcile claims of violence sponsorship with an administration that has prioritized good governance, economic growth, and public safety above political expediency.
Furthermore, the ruling party noted that attempting to link the Governor to unrest in Nkanu West ignores his deep ancestral and political roots in Nkanu land.
”As a true son of Nkanu, the peace, security, development, and wellbeing of our people remain matters of profound importance to His Excellency.
“We urge all stakeholders to refrain from making statements capable of creating division or portraying the Governor and the people of Nkanu negatively without established facts”, the party said
