• Deputy governor loses bid to stop impeachment proceedings
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to all political appointees nursing elective positions to quit his cabinet.
In a statement by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Faruq Ibrahim, the governor instructed that political aides or public servants seeking public offices have March 31, 2026, to resign or retire.
Those addressed in the statement are commissioners, special advisers, directors-general, executive secretaries, managing directors, senior special assistants, senior special reporters, special assistants, special reporters and personal assistants.
The statement was copied to the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the Head of the Civil Service, the Clerk of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Chief Registrars of the High Court and the Sharia Court of Appeal in the state.
Meanwhile, the Federal High Court sitting in Kano, yesterday, declined to grant an application moved by the state’s embattled deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to stop his impeachment plot.
In an ex parte application filed by his counsel, Umar Danbaito, the deputy governor sought an interim injunction to forestall his impeachment, which was already set in motion by the Kano State House of Assembly.
The plaintiff urged the court to halt the process pending the hearing and determination of the original summons filed before the same court.
In his ruling, Justice S.M Shaibu declined the application, saying the applicant did not satisfy the necessary requirements.
He ordered the applicant to serve the respondents with court processes, including a motion ex parte, to enable them to respond appropriately. The court, therefore, adjourned the matter to April 16, 2026.
Thirty-eight lawmakers of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had signed the impeachment notice of the deputy governor in a notice moved by the Majority Leader and representative of Dala constituency, Lawan Husaini.
