As part of efforts aimed at improving digital literacy at rural communities, the Luminarians have donated 20 laptops to a Roy-dek Academy, a school in Makoko, Lagos.

Speaking during the donation, Olubunmi Kushimo flanked by other members of the group, noted that the world is now going digital and it is very important that everyone has digital skills. “And that is why we are donating these laptops to the school through the support of other people. We will appreciate if you focus on learning the necessary skills with the laptops. I can tell you that every member of the Luminarians, our career requires laptop and that is what has been helping us. And I am so sure that the laptop that you have now is going to help you.”

The school Principal, Iliya Polycarp, thanked the benefactors, recalling that they visited the school during summer, saw a need and promised to intervene. “They saw that we have four laptops for the entire 154 students of the school. And today we are proud owners of additional 20 laptops. We are sincerely grateful first to the people that supported them and deemed it fit to make the project a reality.

“To members of the Luminarians, we say a big thank you because you could have turned it to personal use but instead you donated them to the school. In the years ahead, most jobs are going to be computer based and this is putting us on the platform where we can help these children, their curiosity and prepare them for the future.”

He promised that the school will make good use of the laptops aside ensuring they are in good shape.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Esther Ejiogu also thanked the group for supporting their school with the 20 laptops, noting the laptops will go a long way to improve the students in developing valuable digital skills and preparing them for the opportunities of the future. “This is not just donation of laptops, it is an investment in education. We are saying a big thank you for supporting our school and empowering young people.”

The Luminarians is a group of young five ladies; Damilola Obafemi, Adedolapo Arisoyin, Oluwabunmi Kushimo, Tofunmi Talabi and Oyindamola Hammed. It said: “We’re five women and friends who decided that we wanted to be more intentional about the lives we’re building and the women we’re becoming.

“The Luminarians is a space where we can talk about faith, careers, relationships, money, health, friendships, purpose and everything in between. We pray together, have honest conversations, learn from each other, hold each other accountable and, of course, celebrate each other.

“But somewhere along the way, we realised it shouldn’t just be about us. As we grow, we want to give, serve and make room for other people to flourish too.”
