This festive season, you can actually enter the New Year with all confidence and style. Though there are different ways of looking glam, you can re-invent your look and feel fabulous in ruffles. And you can be sure this will make you the centre of attraction and score you major compliments. Whether you are going for a New Year Eve party or religious event, a ruffled top or dress can give you that classy appearance. Sleek is an understatement when it comes to this stylish dress.

The CEO of Enthyst Fashion Klinik and Wardrobe Consultant, Ndidi Obioha, said a ruffle is a pleated piece of decorative fabric, often used as trim on clothes to create some form of a bold statement.

“It can also be described as a decorative frill of lace or gathered ornamentation of fabric, often used to trim or embellish the wrist, neck or waist areas of a fabric,” she explained. “A strip of fabric, when gathered or pleated will create a frill that adds a ruffled line to a garment’s straight edge. There is no casual acceptance of ruffles. You either like them or you don’t. There are different types of ruffles you can find, including the double edge ruffled style, waterfall ruffle style, circular ruffle, and cascading ruffle, among others.

“When deciding on ruffle style to make a top or a dress, you must take into cognisance your body type and size, because ruffles have been known to have a bad reputation of making especially plus size women appear frumpy and unflattering. So, I usually advise people to hide that and choose the cascading ruffles, which sits well on plus-size ladies. Also, vertical ruffles on a bold coloured blouse are quite flattering and youthful. An edgy ruffled floral top says I’ve arrived without looking overbearing, while a fitted bodice and peplum riffles accentuate the waist, when you combine it with bubble sleeves, as they tend to add a fun touch to the top or blouse. For me, details are everything, when it comes to ruffles.

“For pear-shaped women, it is usually best to go for ruffles around the chest area, which help to even out the bust to hip proportions. Ruffles made from silk, chiffon or crepe flared down instead of out tends to create a subtle silhouette on a body of a woman. The idea of wearing ruffles has to do with more of your attitude than body type. You have to be confident to pull off certain types of ruffles. Deciding on wearing ruffled outfits for this festive season really is a way of making bold statements at an event, because they are statement pieces, regardless of the ruffle type you use. I personally love ruffles because of the detailing to bring to an outfit.

Tips on How To Wear Ruffles This Season:
• If you have a small bust and want to create an illusion of a fuller chest, please make sure the ruffles are placed horizontally across your chest. Also, if you have a large bust area, the ruffles on the chest must be placed vertically.

• To create that illusion of a wider hip, ladies with small hips can wear ruffled skirts. If you have hips, please let your ruffles at the bottom of a dress to balance the wider hip.

• If you are wearing an outfit that has ruffles, please keep the rest of your outfit and accessories as simple as possible. This is very important so that it doesn’t look like an overkill.

• To create that edgy look, you throw in a structured jacket over an inner ruffle top. For that black-tie event, you can wear a long ruffled gown with an edgy makeup. For that romantic look with your man this season, you can wear a ruffled fitted top with wide-leg pants or opt for a skinny pair of jeans, if your top has a lot of ruffles. Boyfriend jeans can also go with a ruffled top. Walk into 2020 with glam and style!
